UHL League visit Newport
Two teams representing the United Hellenic League travelled to Albion Rovers’ ground at Kimberley Park in Newport to play the Wales Veterans Over 50 and Over 55s. This was the second in a series of matches to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.
Both games were played in an excellent spirit and the home sides who had won both games at Milton United in March faced sterner opposition and the scorelines flattered Wales.
The Welsh Over 50s won by 4 goals to 1 and the Over 55s won 2 -
The games were ‘kicked off’ by UHL veterans Tadeusz Luska aged 90 (below left) and Sidney Clarke aged 71 (below right).
Man of the match awards were presented to
UHL O50 -
UL O55 -
Wales O50 -

Wales Over 50s 4 UHL 1
Wales took a 10th minute lead when Paul Clark was on hand to meet Jeff White’s cross.
These two combined again for White (right) to head in and he repeated the feat after
half an hour to put Wales in a commanding position with a 3 -
Wales gave first appearances to Paul Stadden, Les Davies, Elvis Ballysingh and Steve Hill and all four played a major part in the win.
UHL showed great spirit in the second half and scored the best goal of the game when their ‘man of the match’ Andy Bennett beat Mike Dowler in the Welsh goal. It was Wales who had the last word however when Gavin Price rounded off a fine move with a clinical finish.
Paul Stadden of Mathern (below) won the Welsh ‘man of the match’ award, closely followed by Les Davies.
Over 40 League
Rhondda 4 Llantrisant 0
Former Champions, Rhondda Vets, moved to the top of the West group when they convincingly beat the season’s surprise package Llantrisant.
Lee Brown slotted home two penalties and Bradley Griffiths and Wayne Thomas got the others.
Wales Over 55s 2 UHL 0
Wales had to work very hard for this win. New caps David Thomas (Merthyr), Robert James (Newport Reps), Roy Jennings (Mathern) and Colin Reddy (The Martyrs) fitted in well and goals by Kevin Brown and Paul Caviel were enough to clinch victory.
David Allan was UHL’s ‘man of the match’ and Wales’ Trevor Taylor (below) deservedly won the ‘man of the match’ award after an outstanding display. This was a particularly fitting award to a player who broke a couple of ribs in his last appearance in June against England.
