Llantrisant’s Hero’s robbed by “offside goal” in a thriller in Merthyr

The eleven men of Llantrisant did themselves proud today in a very entertaining match with 5 goals beingGary (PROLIFIC) Dodd scored in the opening 25 minutes. The Llantrisant scorers was Gary Dodd (pictured right) after 5 minutes who scored the first goal following a pull back from the goal line by Robbie Ryan for him to side foot into the net from 6 yards, the second was scored by Robbie Ryan after 15 minutes following a defence splitting pass from Chalkie White at left back which left the on running Robbie Ryan 20 yards out with keeper advancing and he was able to bend his shot around him into the top corner. The third was scored by Gary Dodd on 25 minutes who diverted a goal bound volley by Robbie Ryan as Doddy calls it “Berbatov” style from 8 yards out following a free kick out on the right wing dropping to Ryan just inside the box.

Llantrisant deservedly led 3-2 at half time and the lack of subs killed them in the second half as the high tempo of the match was having taking its toll. The fresh legs introduced by Merthyr for the second half had the desired effect and eventually the pressure told on the tiring visitors and they scored the two goals and claimed the points. The winning “offside goal” was disputed by Llantrisant and so therefore they felt they fully deserved at least a share of the spoils, it was some minor consolation that Denis Murphy confirmed that he also thought the winning goal was clearly offside.

The Llantrisant defence comprising of Jason Burton, Rob Dunn, John & Evan Elwood and Chalkie White held strong under pressure and provided the spring board for numerous attacks for the marauding Garry Dodd, Pepe Mele and the supporting Robbie Ryan up front to capitalize on, especially in the first half when Llantrisant were tearing Merthyr apart for long periods.

The midfield of Phil Powell, Wayne Harding and John Moloney provided quality support for both the defence and attack throughout the match with some telling defence splitting passes which created numerous chances. Every one of the Llantrisant players were out on their feet at the end of the match having gave 150% effort.

“Llantrisant don’t travel well” it was claimed in the pre match write up in the National press, the Eleven players of Llantrisant laid that claim to rest today, with a skillful and totally committed display that any team would be proud of. Just ask the sixteen players of Merthyr Vets who had to play them.
